How we scored dispensaries

We ranked stores on five checks that decide a trip. Nothing here measures flower quality. Reviews cover product. They do not cover the 20 minutes in the parking lot.

more on this topic

  1. Menu accuracy. Does the online menu match the shelf at 6 p.m.?
  2. Order ahead. Can you place a pickup order without a phone call?
  3. Wait time. Time from door to exit, measured on a Friday.
  4. Hours. Open before 9 a.m. and after 8 p.m. on weekdays.
  5. Delivery radius. Distance from the store to your ZIP code.

A store that fails check 1 fails the ranking. A stale menu costs a second trip. No review score fixes that cost.

how to review a cannabis dispensary

First pick: the store with a live menu

Pick the dispensary that publishes stock counts, not just product names. Stock counts update when a budtender sells the last unit. Names alone update when a manager remembers.

Two checks confirm this before you drive:

Cannabis Dispensary Reviews on Yelp: Convenience Wins

  • Call the store. Ask for a strain listed as in stock on the menu. If the answer is sold out, the menu is a catalog, not inventory.
  • Place a pickup order for 4:30 p.m. If the confirmation states a pickup window of 15 minutes or less, the store reserves product.

California adds a 15% excise tax on retail cannabis plus local sales tax. A $40 eighth can ring up near $50 at the register. A live menu shows the taxed total. A stale menu shows the shelf price.

Second option: delivery first

Delivery removes the parking lot, the line, and the ID check at a counter. It adds a delivery fee and a time window. Check three numbers.

  • Minimum order. Common range is $25 to $50.
  • Delivery fee. $0 to $10 in most metro areas.
  • Window. Two hours is standard. Same-day cutoffs land between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Ask if the driver carries a state license card. Licensed retailers must check age at the door. A driver who skips the ID check is a red flag, not a perk.

Third option: the walk-in with short hours

A store open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. loses to a store open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. for anyone with a job. Hours beat decor. Compare the door sign to the online listing. Holiday hours change without notice.

Parking counts. A store on a six-lane road with a 12-space lot adds 10 minutes. A store with a rear lot adds two.

Reviews to read and reviews to skip

Read reviews that name a date, a wait time, and a product. Skip reviews that only score stars. One-star reviews cluster around two events: an online order that was not ready, and a return that was refused. Both trace back to store policy, not product.

Check the review count. A store with 40 reviews has a wider error bar than a store with 900. Neither count tells you if the menu is current.

Checklist before you drive

  • Menu shows stock, not just names.
  • Pickup confirmation states a time.
  • Hours match the door sign.
  • Tax and fees show before checkout.
  • Delivery radius covers your ZIP code.

Convenience decides the trip when two stores sell the same product at the same price. Price decides when the gap is larger than the delivery fee.
