Answer first
Signs cannabis is ready to harvest are mostly in the trichomes and pistils. Trichomes on the buds should be cloudy, not clear, with a small share of amber. Pistils should be darkened and curled in on most buds. Buds should feel firm and stop putting out new white hairs. Confirm the plant has reached its breeder flowering window, then check again 48 hours later before cutting.
Cannabis Flowering Stages and Harvest Time: A Week-by-Week Guide
Prerequisites
- 30x to 60x loupe or USB microscope
- Breeder flowering time and planted date
- Phone notes or a notebook
- Clean gloves
Run these checks in order
Inspect trichomes on calyxes. Look at the small seed pods on the bud, not the sugar leaves. Clear trichomes mean early; cloudy means peak; amber means past peak for many growers. Sample three buds at top, middle, and lower height.
Check pistils on several buds. Count white hairs. Most pistils should be orange, brown, or red and curled inward. A few white pistils can remain. Pistil color alone is weak evidence because heat, light, and handling can darken them.
Cannabis Harvest Time by Trichomes: Clear, Cloudy, or Amber?
Look for bud swell and stopped new growth. Buds should look full and dense for the cultivar. New white hairs should be scarce. Fan leaves may yellow late in flower, but that is not a harvest signal by itself.
Compare the plant to the breeder flowering window. Count days from the start of 12/12 lighting or from first flower, whichever the breeder uses. Treat the window as an estimate. Environment, cultivar, and light intensity shift it.
Recheck the same buds 48 hours later. Trichomes and pistils do not change fast. A second look separates a real harvest window from a one-day color shift.
Trichome color guide
- Clear: early, low potency for most cultivars
- Cloudy: peak window for many growers
- Amber: past peak for some, preferred by others for a heavier effect
- Mix of cloudy and amber: common harvest target
Common mistakes
- Checking sugar leaves instead of calyxes
- Harvesting on pistil color alone
- Using a phone zoom instead of a loupe
- Cutting on the first amber trichome
- Ignoring the breeder window and local law
Decision rule
Harvest when most trichomes on calyxes are cloudy, pistils are mostly darkened, and buds have stopped swelling. If two of the three signs are missing, wait and check again in two days. Follow local cannabis cultivation laws.
