For cannabis grown in soil, keep the root zone between pH 6.0 and 7.0, with 6.2 to 6.5 as the sweet spot. In coco coir and hydroponics, aim for 5.5 to 6.5, and 5.8 to 6.2 for most of the cycle. When nutrient pH for cannabis growth falls outside those windows, minerals stay dissolved in the water instead of reaching the roots, and the plant shows deficiencies even though you fed it correctly.
Why pH Controls Nutrient Uptake
Nutrients enter roots as dissolved ions, and the pH of the water around the roots decides which of those ions stay soluble. Lower the pH too far and calcium, magnesium and molybdenum become hard for the plant to absorb. Push it too high and iron, manganese, zinc, boron and copper start to drop out of solution. Either way the bottles are full, the plant is starving, and the leaves tell you with yellowing, spotting or burnt tips.

Which Nutrients Drop Out First

- Below 5.5: calcium, magnesium, molybdenum
- Above 7.0: iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron
- Above 7.5: phosphorus availability starts to slip as well
Interveinal yellowing on new leaves usually means the pH drifted up. Rusty spots on older leaves often mean it drifted down.
How to Measure and Adjust
- Test your source water first. Hard, alkaline water fights every adjustment you make.
- Mix nutrients at full strength, then measure. Nutrients themselves shift the pH.
- Add pH up or pH down in small amounts, stir, and wait 15 to 30 minutes before testing again.
- Record the reading. Track reservoir or runoff pH daily in hydro and every few days in soil.
- Calibrate your meter with fresh buffer solution at least once a month.
Why pH Drifts
Plants pull ions out of solution unevenly, which moves the pH on its own. Evaporation concentrates salts. Microbes in organic media release acids as they break down matter. A steady drift of a few tenths is normal, and you correct it by topping up or adjusting slowly rather than dumping in a large dose of pH down.
