Quick answer
No public dataset ranks the top THC strain in all 50 states. Strain sales come from private retail trackers, and each tracker covers a different set of states. Leafly publishes yearly strain lists built from its menu and search data. Headset reports strain and category sales from point-of-sale records in a subset of legal states. BDSA tracks category share across the country. The lists overlap on a few names: Blue Dream, OG Kush, Sour Diesel, Gelato, and Runtz. Everything past the top five follows state law, license counts, and what distributors carry.
Why the state lists disagree
- Cultivation limits. States that cap canopy size put fewer cultivars on shelves.
- Market age. States open since 2014 carry more products than states that opened in 2022.
- Labeling. One genotype sells as Gelato, Gelato 33, or Larry Bird. Scanners count the label, not the genetics.
- Channel. Flower, vape, and pre-roll rankings produce different winners.
Names that repeat across state lists
- Blue Dream. Sativa-leaning hybrid, myrcene and pinene, 17% to 24% THC.
- OG Kush. Myrcene and limonene, 18% to 25% THC.
- Sour Diesel. Terpinolene and caryophyllene, 17% to 22% THC.
- Gelato. Caryophyllene and limonene, 20% to 25% THC.
- Runtz. Caryophyllene and limonene, 19% to 27% THC.
- Wedding Cake. Caryophyllene and limonene, 20% to 25% THC.
- Jack Herer. Terpinolene, 15% to 20% THC.
THC ranges come from licensed lab reports. Numbers move with grow, batch, and lab method.

Convenience as the sorting factor
Ordering from a phone screen changes product choice. A shopper sees THC percentage, price, and one familiar name. Delivery, drive-thru pickup, and pre-roll multi-packs shorten the decision. Infused pre-rolls and vape cartridges gained share while loose flower lost share in several states. Leafly and Headset both put pre-rolls and vapes among the fastest growing categories in 2023 and 2024. Strain lists now track what a store can ship fast, not what a grower picks.

State notes
- California. Largest legal market. Retail sales started in January 2018. Thousands of SKUs split the flower rankings, so no single strain holds a large share.
- Colorado. Retail sales started in January 2014. Long-running stores carry older cultivars such as Chemdawg and Durban Poison next to newer Runtz crosses.
- Oregon. Retail sales started in October 2015. License counts ran high, prices fell, and value flower and pre-rolls lead unit volume.
- Michigan. Adult-use sales started in December 2019. Flower and pre-rolls hold most unit sales.
- Florida. Medical program. Amendment 3, the 2024 adult-use measure, failed. Whole flower, vapes, and edibles are the main categories.
- New York. Adult-use retail started in December 2022. Store count is small next to California, so a few brands set the top sellers.
How to read a state strain list
- Check the source. Menu data, search data, and POS scans give different answers.
- Check the period. Monthly lists move more than yearly lists.
- Check the category. A flower ranking does not predict a vape ranking.
- Check the sample. One chain's sales are not a state.
What is not known
No tracker publishes strain-level sales for every state with legal cannabis. Several medical states have no public strain data at all. Comparisons across states also fail because testing rules and label names differ. Treat any statewide strain ranking as a snapshot from one data source.
