What the trichome colors measure
- Clear: THC acid is present, THC is low. The plant is not ready.
- Milky: THC sits at peak. This window runs 1 to 2 weeks on most photoperiod plants.
- Amber: THC breaks down into CBN. Terpenes drop at the same time.
Growers read trichomes on the calyx, not the sugar leaves. Sugar leaves turn amber 1 to 2 weeks before the calyx. A 60x scope shows the ratio.

Option 1: 70% cloudy, 30% clear
Peak THC in most lab tests. Terpene content at peak. The high runs head heavy. Flavor holds more limonene and pinene. Common for sativa lines and daytime use.

Where convenience changes the answer
Trichome color is set at harvest. Retail buyers cannot see it. Dispensary labels show THC and CBN percentages, not trichome ratio. Pre-rolls and trim blend multiple harvests, so the ratio is gone. For a buyer, lab numbers are the input. For a grower, the scope is the input.
What the data does not show
No controlled trial compares trichome color to a measured high. CBN sedation rests on user reports and small studies. CBN binds CB1 and CB2 at low affinity, weaker than THC. A flower testing 1% CBN is not a sleep drug on its own. Myrcene and other terpenes also shift with age, so amber flower differs in more than one compound.
