Short answer
Live resin concentrates test at 60% to 80% THC in most state lab reports. Distillate vape carts test higher, 85% to 95% THC. Live resin holds 3% to 8% terpenes by weight. Distillate holds under 1% unless a producer adds terpenes back.
Potency is not a quality score. A 65% live resin with 6% terpenes can hit harder than a 90% distillate cart with 0.5% terpenes. Terpenes and minor cannabinoids change the effect.
How live resin is made
Growers harvest cannabis and freeze it within hours. The material stays at -20°F to -40°F until extraction. Hydrocarbon solvents, most often butane or propane, strip cannabinoids and terpenes from the frozen plant. The solvent is purged. Heat stays low, so THCA remains mostly intact.
Fresh frozen material holds more volatile terpenes than dried and cured flower. That is the main gap between live resin and cured resin.
THCA, THC, and label math
Raw live resin holds most THC as THCA. THCA does not produce psychoactive effects until heat removes a carboxyl group. Labs report THCA and THC in separate columns. A label that lists total THC already did the conversion: THCA times 0.877 plus THC.
A jar labeled 70% total THC may show 5% THC and 74% THCA. Read the column, not the big number on the front.
Live resin vs other concentrates
- Live resin: 60% to 80% THC, 3% to 8% terpenes, full cannabinoid profile.
- Distillate: 85% to 95% THC, low terpenes, one cannabinoid.
- Live rosin: 60% to 85% THC, solventless, terpene content close to live resin.
- Budder and badder: the same extract as live resin, whipped to a different texture. Potency does not change.
Convenience and format
Potency depends on the extract, not the hardware. A 1-gram live resin cart and 1 gram of live resin dabs from the same batch test the same. Hardware changes dose per puff, not concentration.
Vape pens let a user take a 2 mg to 5 mg dose in one draw. A dab runs 20 mg to 50 mg. That gap explains why a cart feels weaker.
Some brands cut live resin with distillate to reach 85% THC on the label. Read the ingredient list. A product called live resin with distillate added is a blend.
What to check on a lab panel
- Total THC and total terpenes on the same panel.
- Batch date. Terpenes drop over months.
- Residual solvent results.
