How to Take Cannabis Oil Dosage

There is no standard dose of cannabis oil. The FDA has not approved cannabis oil as a drug, with one exception: Epidiolex, a CBD product for seizures. Epidiolex dosing uses body weight, 2.5 mg per kg taken twice a day, up to 10 mg per kg twice a day. For non-prescription oil, clinicians and public health agencies use one rule: start low, go slow. A common first step is 1 mg to 2.5 mg of THC. Wait 2 hours. Add 1 mg to 2.5 mg if needed. CBD studies use 10 mg to 50 mg per day for sleep and anxiety, and up to 300 mg per day in some trials.

Read the label before you measure

Labels list cannabinoids per bottle and per milliliter. A 30 mL bottle with 1000 mg of THC holds 33 mg per mL. At 20 drops per mL, that is 1.7 mg per drop. Check which unit the label uses. Some labels list mg per dropper, others list mg per bottle. Pre-filled droppers and marked syringes cut measuring errors.

Cannabis Oil in Food Recipes: Dose, Heat, and Safety Guide

Measure one dose

  • Use the dropper that came with the bottle. A standard dropper holds 1 mL.
  • Draw oil to the printed mark. A 0.5 mL mark on a 33 mg per mL bottle equals 16.5 mg of THC.
  • Hold the oil under the tongue for 60 to 120 seconds for faster onset. Swallowing delays onset.
  • Wait 2 hours before the next dose. Do not chase a dose.

Onset and duration

Sublingual oil acts in 15 to 45 minutes. Swallowed oil acts in 30 to 120 minutes. Peak effect arrives at 2 to 4 hours. Effects last 4 to 8 hours. Food changes absorption. A fatty meal can raise THC blood levels.

How to Use CBD Oil vs THC Oil: A Convenience-First Comparison

Oral absorption

Published estimates put oral THC bioavailability at 4% to 12% of the dose. Inhaled THC reaches 10% to 25%. The same milligram count in oil and in flower does not produce the same effect. Liver enzymes convert THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a compound with stronger psychoactive effects, which is why edibles hit hard and last long.

Titration schedule

  1. Day 1: 1 mg to 2.5 mg THC, or 10 mg to 25 mg CBD.
  2. Wait 2 hours. Note the effects.
  3. If you feel nothing, add the same amount.
  4. Raise the dose no more than once per day.
  5. Stop at the lowest dose that works.

Risks and limits

THC impairs driving, memory, and balance. Other effects include dry mouth, fast heart rate, and anxiety. High doses cause panic, vomiting, and unsteady walking. CBD can raise liver enzymes and interacts with blood thinners such as warfarin and with seizure drugs. Cannabis oil is not for people under 21 in states with legal adult use, and not for use in pregnancy.

Keep a log

Write the date, product name, batch number, dose in mg, time of dose, and effects. This record shows your response over weeks. Bring it to a clinician.

When to call a clinician

Call for chest pain, fainting, a seizure, or vomiting that will not stop. For a large accidental dose, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
