Read a terpene label in three passes. First, the total terpenes by weight. Second, the top three terpenes listed with their percentages. Third, whether those terpenes are cannabis-derived or botanical. That is the whole method. A package that shows a strain name and a THC number but no terpene panel is not telling you what the product smells like or how it is likely to land.

Total terpenes: the number that sets expectations

Flower usually lands somewhere between 1% and 3% total terpenes by weight. Above 3% is high. Above 4% is rare enough that I want to see the batch date and the lab name. Concentrates play by different rules, because the percentage refers to the weight of the extract, not the flower it came from. A live resin reading 6% terpenes is not the same as flower reading 3%.

If the label reports mg/g instead of a percentage, divide by 10. One percent equals 10 mg/g. Some labels flip between the two formats on the same shelf, which is confusing on purpose or by accident, and either way you have to do the math yourself.

Cannabis-derived versus botanical terpenes

This is the distinction that matters most right now. Vape carts, gummies, and beverages get their flavor from one of two sources. Cannabis-derived terpenes are pulled from the plant itself, so the profile tracks the actual cultivar. Botanical terpenes are food-grade compounds from citrus peel, pine, cloves, and hops. Botanical is not unsafe, but it is a reconstruction, not a fingerprint.

Most US state labeling rules require the source to be named. Look for the words "cannabis-derived terpenes" or "botanical terpenes." If the package says "natural flavors" and nothing else, assume botanical.

Percentages, "ND," and other quiet hedges

Labs sometimes report a terpene as "ND" or "<LOQ." That means below the limit of quantification, not zero. Fine on a minor compound. A problem when a product marketed as terpene-rich shows ND across the whole panel. The lab could not measure it, which is not the same as the terpenes being there.
