Answer

A bowl snaps when the whole load burns in one draw. Three things control that: grind size, load amount and airflow. Grind to a medium cut, load an amount that matches one hit, and pack with a light hand. Loose material lets flame and air move down the bowl as one front. A tight pack smothers the cherry and leaves dark, damp bud.

What "snap" means

Snapping a bowl is pipe and bong slang for a hit that clears the bowl. The cherry moves from the top of the load to the screen in one pull. The bowl comes back with white ash. Charred green left in the bowl means the pack failed on one of three points: grind, load size or airflow.

Steps

  1. Grind. Use a two-piece or three-piece grinder to a medium cut. Pieces about the size of a peppercorn. Too fine and the pack clogs. Too chunky and the cherry jumps.
  2. Check moisture. Bud that crumbles to dust between your fingers is dry. Dry herb burns fast and hot. Bud that clumps and sticks is damp. Damp herb smolders and needs a relight.
  3. Pick the load. Start with 0.1 g to 0.2 g in a hand pipe. Fill the bowl to 60 to 70 percent of its depth. A bowl packed to the rim takes more heat than one pull can deliver.
  4. Drop, do not press. Let ground herb fall into the bowl. Level the top with a tap on the side of the pipe. One firm tamp with a thumb turns a snap into a session.
  5. Leave a channel. Keep a small gap between the load and the screen. Air moves through the ash and the burn travels in one direction.
  6. Corner it. Hold the flame at the edge of the bowl at a 30 to 45 degree angle. Draw while the flame touches herb, then pull the flame away. Keep drawing to carry the cherry down.
  7. Draw at a steady rate. Aim for a three to five second inhale. A hard rip pulls the load into the stem and kills the pull.

Load range by piece

  • Hand pipe, small: 0.1 g to 0.15 g
  • Hand pipe, large: 0.2 g to 0.3 g
  • Bong slide, 14 mm: 0.15 g to 0.25 g
  • One-hitter: 0.05 g to 0.1 g

These ranges come from common bowl volumes. Bowl depth and screen position differ by piece, so set the load by ash color on the first hit.

Common mistakes

  • Packing tight to make the bowl last. That works against the snap.
  • Overfilling. Herb above the rim burns before the cherry reaches the middle.
  • Skipping the grinder. Fingers tear bud into chunks of uneven size.
  • Holding flame on the bowl. The top layer scorches and the rest of the load stalls.
  • No screen. Ash falls through and the draw loosens mid-hit.

After the hit

Tap ash out while the bowl is warm. A bowl that snaps leaves white ash and no resin ring above the screen. If the ash is black or half the load is left, tamp less and grind coarser on the next one. Clean the bowl with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt once a week. Resin narrows the hole, and a narrow hole changes the draw, which changes how the load burns.

One note

Combustion produces smoke with tar and irritants. The pack does not change that. Pipe and bong technique only changes how the load burns.
