The short answer
Dump the old water, flush the piece with hot tap water, then shake it with 91% isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt until the resin lifts. Rinse until the water runs clear, let it air dry, and refill with fresh water. A quartz banger gets its own treatment, a warm alcohol bath and cotton swabs, because salt will dull and scratch the surface. Whole job takes about ten minutes for a rig you clean regularly, closer to half an hour if it has been sitting.
What you actually need
- 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol. The 70% stuff works but takes longer and leaves more residue behind.
- Coarse salt, like kosher or rock salt. Fine table salt dissolves too fast and does not scrub.
- Hot tap water. Not boiling. Boiling water can crack glass through thermal shock.
- Cotton swabs, paper towels, and a small container for soaking the banger.
- Two corks or rubber stoppers if your rig has open joints you need to plug while shaking.
Step by step
- Empty the water into the sink. Do not pour it down a drain with reclaim still floating in it if you can help it. Reclaim sets up like wax and clogs traps.
- Rinse the glass with hot tap water to loosen the worst of it. Warm glass releases resin faster than cold glass.
- Pour in a spoonful of coarse salt, then add enough isopropyl alcohol to cover the salt and reach the dirty zones.
- Plug the openings and shake. Shake in short bursts and rotate the piece so the salt slurry hits the percolator, the neck, and the downstem. That abrasive action is doing most of the work.
- Let it sit five minutes if the buildup is thick, then shake again.
- Pour out the dirty alcohol into a sealed container for disposal. Do not send it down the drain.
- Rinse with hot water until you cannot smell or taste alcohol, then a final rinse with distilled water if your tap is hard.
Cleaning a quartz banger
Skip the salt here. Quartz is softer than people assume and abrasive grit leaves a haze that never comes back. Instead, swab the banger with a dry cotton swab right after each dab while it is still warm, then a second swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol. For a banger with baked-on char, soak it in a small jar of alcohol for an hour, wipe with a swab, and repeat. Dark scorch marks that survive a soak are usually devitrification, not dirt, and no solvent will fix that.
I look for two things after a soak: a banger that is uniformly clear rather than cloudy at the dish, and a nail that seats flat without wobble. Both tell you the cleaning worked and the joint is still true.
Heavy reclaim and stubborn spots
Reclaim is thick, sticky, and stubborn. Warm it first. Set the rig somewhere warm, or run hot tap water over the outside of the glass for a minute, then add alcohol. Warm alcohol cuts through reclaim much faster than cold. For a downstem that is genuinely clogged, a pipe cleaner soaked in alcohol works better than shaking. Give it a gentle twist, not a hard scrape.
How to Clean a Dab Rig Nail (Quartz, Titanium, Ceramic)
Drying and reassembly
Shake out the excess water and set the piece on a towel to air dry. Residual alcohol evaporates quickly, but trapped water in a percolator can sit for hours. If you want to dab soon, run a little fresh alcohol through, shake it out, and let it sit for five minutes. Reassemble dry, add fresh water, and check that every joint seats fully before you heat anything.
How often to clean
Change the water every session. That is not optional, and it is the single biggest factor in how the rig tastes. Do a full alcohol clean every week or two for daily use, or whenever the glass looks cloudy or the pull feels restricted. Rigs used occasionally can go a month. A dirty rig does not just taste bad. Residue builds up in the airway and vapor picks up that stale flavor on the way through.
Things that damage rigs
- Boiling or near-boiling water on cold glass, which can crack it outright.
- Salt in a quartz banger or on any polished joint.
- Metal tools scraping the inside of a banger.
- Alcohol near an open flame or a hot nail. Isopropyl is flammable, and vapor from a spill can flash.
- Shaking a rig while holding it by the neck or the mouthpiece. Hold the body, and expect a heavy piece to need both hands.
Work over the sink with a towel down, keep the alcohol bottle capped, and ventilate the room. That is the whole method. Clean glass, fresh water, and a banger that still looks like quartz.
