Short answer

Yellow leaves during veg come down to a handful of causes: a nitrogen or magnesium shortage, pH that drifted out of range, roots sitting too wet, light or heat stress, or the oldest leaves simply aging out. The pattern tells you which one. If yellow starts at the bottom and climbs, you're looking at a mobile nutrient. If it starts at the top on new growth, it's an immobile nutrient or something environmental.

Read the pattern before you touch anything

I check three things first: which leaves turned, what the veins look like, and whether the leaf is drooping or just fading.

  • Bottom or middle leaves with green veins and yellow tissue between them: magnesium.
  • Edges yellowing then crisping: potassium, often with salt buildup.

  • Uniform yellow plus droop and stalled growth: root zone or overwatering.

Mobile versus immobile nutrients

Plants can pull nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium out of old tissue and send it to new growth. That's why a nitrogen shortage shows up low on the plant first. The plant is robbing the lower leaves to feed the top. Iron, calcium, sulfur, and boron don't move, so when those run short the newest leaves pay for it.

Nitrogen

The classic veg problem. Pale green sliding into yellow, even across the leaf, starting at the bottom. In a hot soil mix it usually means the plant outgrew the charge and wants feeding. In coco or hydro, check your EC before you pour anything in.

Magnesium

Interveinal chlorosis on older and middle leaves, so the veins stay green while everything between them goes yellow. Under LEDs and in coco this is common, because magnesium uptake drops when the root zone runs cool or pH sits on the low end. A gram of Epsom salt per liter of water handles mild cases.

Iron and sulfur

Iron shows as yellow between dark green veins on the newest leaves. That's usually pH, not a true shortage. Sulfur looks like the entire new leaf went pale, and it develops slowly, so it's easy to mistake for nitrogen until you notice it started high instead of low.

pH is the most common hidden cause

You can feed a perfect ratio and still watch leaves yellow if pH is off, because the roots can't take the nutrients up. Soil and peat mixes want roughly 6.0 to 6.8. Coco and hydro want 5.5 to 6.2. A cheap pen that hasn't been calibrated will lie to you, so calibrate it or buy fresh reference solution before you chase a deficiency that isn't there.

Overwatering and root health

Soggy roots can't breathe, and a plant that can't take up water can't take up nutrients either. The tell is droop plus yellow plus a pot that stays heavy for days. Let the medium dry back. If the pot smells sour or you see slime on the roots, you're fighting root rot, not a deficiency, and more nutrients will make it worse.

Light, heat, and airflow

Intense light hung too close bleaches and yellows the top canopy. Heat stress curls leaf edges upward and can mimic a potassium shortage. If the pale leaves are the top ones and the veins look fine, raise the light before you change the feed.

A fix order that works

  1. Measure pH and EC in your runoff or reservoir.
  2. Lift the pot and check how heavy it is.
  3. Check canopy temperature and light distance.
  4. Only then adjust nutrients, and change one variable at a time.
  5. Wait 5 to 7 days. Leaves that already yellowed won't turn green again, so watch new growth instead.

When yellowing is normal

The first single-blade leaves and the cotyledons yellow and drop as the plant matures. That isn't a problem. Neither are the lowest fan leaves getting shaded out in a thick canopy. If it's two leaves at the bottom and the rest of the plant is praying, leave it alone and keep your routine steady.
