Store cannabis in a small airtight glass jar filled almost to the top, kept in a dark drawer at 60 to 65°F with a 58% or 62% two-way humidity pack. That setup protects smell and freshness better than any specialty container. Light, heat, oxygen, and dry air break down the aromatic compounds that make flower smell like flower, and they do it in weeks, not years.
What you need
- Glass jar with a gasket or metal lid, sized so the batch fills 75 to 90% of it
- Two-way humidity pack rated 58% or 62%
- Small hygrometer that fits inside the jar
- Dark, cool drawer or cabinet that stays under 70°F
- Labels and a marker
Step by step
- Wash the jar and lid with hot water, then let both air-dry fully before use.
- Fill the jar to 75 to 90% of its volume so there is little trapped air above the flower.
- Drop in one humidity pack sized for the jar volume.
- Set the hygrometer on top of the flower and close the lid until it seals.
- Place the jar in a dark drawer or cabinet that stays between 60 and 65°F.
- Open the lid for about five minutes once a week for the first two weeks, then every two weeks after that.
- Read the hygrometer each time you open the jar and confirm it sits between 58 and 62% relative humidity.
- Write the strain and the date on the label and put the jar back in the dark.
- Smoke or vape the oldest jar first so nothing sits long enough to fade.
How long it holds
Flower kept in this range holds its smell for about six months and stays smokeable for a year. After that, terpenes keep fading even when the humidity stays correct. A jar that reads under 55% is drying out and will smell flat within days. A jar that reads over 65% is a mold risk and needs the lid off for a few hours in a dry room.
What kills smell
- Plastic bags and plastic tubs, which let aroma escape and transfer plastic odor
- The refrigerator or freezer, where condensation and food smells do the damage
- Direct sun and warm shelves above 77°F
- Grinding more than you plan to use in a day
- Squeezing flower tight to fit a jar that is too small
- Leaving the jar open on a counter for hours
When to throw it out
Discard flower that shows white fuzz, gray powder, or a musty ammonia smell, and discard anything that crumbles to dust in your fingers. Mold spores spread through a jar fast, so toss the whole batch rather than picking out the visible spots.
