Short answer
A milligram number on the display does not make a scale milligram accurate. Three things decide it: the verification scale interval used for tolerances, the minimum weight at which the scale still holds those tolerances, and whether the model carries an NTEP Certificate of Conformance for commercial use. A 0.001 g scale with no approval is a compliance problem. A 0.01 g scale with the right approval and a known minimum weight is often the safer tool for flower.
Readability versus accuracy
The box prints the readability. The spec sheet hides the accuracy. Display increment (d) is how fine the numbers read. Verification scale interval (e) is what the tolerances are built on. On legal-for-trade scales, e equals d, and the allowed error grows with load. A scale that reads to 1 mg at zero can be off several milligrams at 100 g. That gap is normal, not a defect, and it is exactly why a 0.001 g display means little on its own.

I look for two numbers before anything else: repeatability and linearity. If the datasheet omits them, assume the worst case for that price point.
Minimum weight, the number nobody reads
Every precision scale has a floor below which the reading is guesswork. The old shorthand of 20 times the display increment is a starting point, not a promise. USP General Chapter 41 takes a better route: run repeated weighings with the same weight and find where the standard deviation stays inside an acceptable band. For a 0.001 g scale, the practical floor often lands in the tens of milligrams. If your smallest portion is 5 mg, that scale may not carry the job, no matter how the screen looks.

The compliance layer
Cannabis scales used for transactions are commercial weighing devices. Most states require an approved model, an inspection seal from the state weights and measures program or the county sealer, and periodic re-inspection. Ask for the Certificate of Conformance number and keep it on file. Typical requirements:
- NTEP-approved model, Class II or Class III under Handbook 44
- Current seal from the local weights and measures authority
- Calibration weights traceable to NIST, ASTM Class 1 or 2 for milligram work

Where milligram accuracy changes the number
- Bulk flower and prerolls: 0.01 g readability is normal. Minimum weight matters far more than the last digit.
- Concentrates: 0.001 g helps, but only if the scale holds tolerance at the portion size you scoop.
- Edibles production: errors stack. Portion weight times potency per gram equals the dose on the label, so small weight errors multiply into serving-size mistakes.
- On-site lab sampling: this is balance work, not retail transaction work. Use gear rated for it, or send the sample out.
Habits that cost you milligrams
- Level the scale every shift. Half a bubble off shifts low-load readings.
- Warm it up. Strain-gauge units commonly need 15 to 30 minutes to settle.
- Kill the airflow. AC vents, open doors, and hands resting on the bench all move the number.
- Use a draft shield below 10 mg.
- Tare before each portion and do not stack tares.
- Move it away from printers, fridges, and anything that hums.
Convenience has a measurable cost
Convenience is a fair thing to want at a busy counter. Just separate convenience features from accuracy features. Fast settling time, internal calibration weight, USB-C charging, and a small footprint are convenience. Repeatability, minimum weight, NTEP status, temperature range, and overload protection are accuracy. A scale that saves four seconds per transaction but drifts 30 mg by noon costs more in rework and audit exposure than it saves in labor. The argument for convenience only holds when the accuracy floor is already met.
Calibration and daily checks
External calibration with certified weights is the default for legal-for-trade work. Internal motorized calibration is handy, but it calibrates against a mechanism inside the housing, not a traceable mass. I check one weight near the working range every morning and run a fuller span check monthly. Log it. When an inspector or an auditor asks, a dated sheet beats a verbal assurance every time.
