Mistake 1: Treating pH as a set-and-forget number
In soil, buffers do part of the work for you. In hydro, the root zone is the reservoir, so pH moves the moment plants start feeding. I check pH daily, sometimes twice in late flower. Most cannabis hydro runs sit between 5.5 and 6.5, with 5.8 as a comfortable middle.

Mistake 2: Feeding by the bottle chart
Nutrient labels are written to sell nutrients, not to match your plant. Start young plants at a quarter to half the listed strength. If the chart says 2.0 EC and your seedlings look dark and waxy, the chart is wrong for your room.
Signs you're running too hot
- Leaf tips burned brown while the rest of the leaf looks fine
- Dark green, shiny leaves that curl down like claws
- White salt crust on the net pot or the top of the clay pebbles
- pH that keeps crashing no matter what you add
Adding more nutrients is the wrong move for a deficiency caused by pH lockout. If pH is off, the food is already in the water. The plant just can't reach it.
Mistake 3: Forgetting that roots need oxygen
Roots need dissolved oxygen as much as they need water. One small airstone in a five gallon bucket with a weak pump isn't enough once the plant gets big. Use two stones, or a long bar, and a pump rated above what the bucket size suggests.
Leave an air gap of one to two inches between the bottom of the net pot and the water line. Burying the whole root mass does the plant no favors.
Water temperature matters here too. Above roughly 70 degrees, water holds less oxygen and water mold gets comfortable. Keep the reservoir in the mid 60s if you can.
Mistake 4: Letting light into the reservoir
Clear tubing, translucent buckets, and an uncovered window in the lid all grow algae. Algae eats your nutrients, pushes pH around, and gives root rot a place to start. Black tubing, opaque buckets, and a lid that actually covers the hole. Cheap fix, big payoff.
Mistake 5: Topping off with plain water
Topping off with plain water dilutes the reservoir and leaves salt behind. Topping off with full strength solution pushes EC higher as water evaporates. Either way the ratio drifts. Change the reservoir every 7 to 14 days, and top off with a lightly diluted mix in between.
Mistake 6: Mixing nutrients in the wrong order
Pouring concentrated calcium and magnesium into concentrated base nutrients can create a precipitate your plants never get to use. The order that works: silica first, wait, then calmag, then base A, then base B, then additives. Stir between each addition. Don't pour two concentrates into the same spot at the same time.
Mistake 7: Drowning the starter cube
Rockwool holds a lot of water. Beginners keep it soaked, the stem rots at the base, and the seedling falls over. Water it, then let it dry back before watering again. Move the cube into the system once roots poke out the sides, not before.
Mistake 8: Panicking on day three
Hydroponics moves fast, and new growers read every leaf as a crisis. A droopy afternoon is not a deficiency. Take a photo, check pH and EC, and wait a day. Changing five things at once means you learn nothing about which one mattered.

- Calibrate pH and EC meters every couple of weeks and keep storage solution in the probe cap
- Keep a spare air pump. Pumps die quietly and roots die fast
- Write down pH, EC, water temp, and water level every time you check. Patterns show up in a week of notes
- Start with one bucket before you build a rack

You don't need a lab. You need a meter you trust, a reservoir that stays cool and dark, and enough air moving into the water. Get those right and the plant does most of the work.
