The short answer

A cannabis brownie is a regular brownie made with infused butter or oil. The recipe is not the hard part. Decarboxylation is. Skip it and you get baked goods that taste like weed and do almost nothing.

Cannabis Brownies vs Cookies: Which Edible Wins for Convenience?

Here is the whole process: decarb the flower in the oven, steep it in butter or oil, strain, then use that fat in any brownie recipe you already like. Boxed mix works. From-scratch works. The infusion carries the THC, not the chocolate.

Step 1: Decarb the flower

Raw THC exists as THCA, which is not psychoactive. Heat converts it. Skip this step and you have wasted a good eighth.

  1. Heat the oven to 240°F (115°C).
  2. Break the flower into small pieces, but don't grind it to dust. Spread it on a parchment-lined sheet in a single layer.
  3. Bake 35 to 45 minutes, stirring once at the halfway mark. It should smell toasty, not burnt.
  4. Cool it completely before infusing.

Step 2: Infuse the butter or oil

Coconut oil extracts a little better than butter and keeps longer. Butter tastes better in brownies. Either is fine.

Melt 1 cup (2 sticks) of butter with 1 cup of water in a saucepan over your lowest heat, or use a double boiler. Add 7 grams of decarbed flower. Hold it at 160 to 180°F for 2 to 3 hours, stirring now and then. The water keeps the butter from scorching.

Strain it through cheesecloth into a jar. Chill it. The butter hardens on top, the water sinks, and you pour the water off and toss it.

Short on time? Plenty of people run 1 hour at 180°F and call it done. You lose some potency. That is the trade.

Alternative: skip the infusion

In legal states you can buy THC-infused butter, oil, or tincture and stir it in at the end. That is the fastest route by far. Read the label for total milligrams, since a bottle of infused oil can range from 100 mg to 1000 mg.

Step 3: A basic brownie recipe

This makes one 8x8 pan, about 16 squares.

  • 1/2 cup cannabutter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder

Heat the oven to 325°F, not 350°F. Lower heat protects the THC. Cream the butter and sugar, beat in the eggs and vanilla, then fold in the dry ingredients until just combined. Spread it in a greased 8x8 pan and bake 25 to 30 minutes, until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.

Cool completely in the pan before cutting. Warm brownies crumble, and worse, you will be tempted to eat one before you have thought about the dose.

Step 4: Do the dose math before you bake

Rough formula: grams of flower x 1000 x THC percentage x 0.75 for extraction loss = total milligrams in your butter.

Example: 7 grams at 20% THC gives 1400 mg of potential THC. At 75% extraction you land near 1050 mg. Use half that butter in the pan and you have about 525 mg across 16 squares, or roughly 33 mg per brownie.

That is more than three standard servings. Most states cap a single serving at 10 mg. For a first batch, cut those squares into quarters at 8 mg each, or start with 3.5 grams of flower instead.

Step 5: Store and label them

Wrap the cut squares and keep them in the fridge for a week, or freeze them for a few months. Label the container with the date and the milligrams per square. Unlabeled edibles are how people end up on the couch for six hours.

Keep them away from kids and pets. Edibles drive a large share of cannabis poison control calls for young children, and the brownie format is a big reason why.

What an edible feels like, and when

Nothing happens for 30 to 120 minutes. That wait is where most bad nights start, because people eat a second brownie at minute 45. Give it two full hours. Effects last longer than smoked cannabis, often four to six hours, and the peak is slower to arrive.

Don't drive. Don't pair it with alcohol on a first try. If you feel too high, know that no one has died from a THC overdose, though the panic is real. Sit somewhere quiet and wait it out.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the decarb. This is the single biggest one.
  • Baking at 350°F or higher for a long stretch, which degrades THC.
  • Using the whole batch of butter without doing the math.
  • Grinding flower into powder and leaving it in the batter. It tastes harsh and adds nothing.
  • Eating one on an empty stomach and assuming it isn't working.

Convenience has changed this whole process. Pre-infused butter, boxed brownie mix, and a $15 decarboxylator make a batch possible in one afternoon. The recipe was never the hard part. The dose is.
