Start with the label
Broad spectrum means the product has CBD plus other cannabinoids, terpenes, or both. THC is removed or cut to a level the lab does not detect. Full spectrum keeps THC up to 0.3% by dry weight under the 2018 Farm Bill. Isolate is CBD alone. If a label reads broad spectrum but lists only "hemp extract," ask for the batch lab report.

A $19 bottle with 300 mg costs $0.06 per mg. A $55 bottle with 1,500 mg costs $0.04 per mg. Divide the total price by the total mg. Online sellers sit at $0.02 to $0.03 per mg. Store prices run $0.05 to $0.15 per mg. Same-day pickup and delivery add cost, not value.

Convenience has three forms
- Same-day delivery from a local shop. Ask for the delivery radius and the order cutoff time.
- Curbside or drive-through pickup. Call first. Most shops hold an order for 24 hours.
- Mail order. Hemp can ship across state lines under federal law. Some states restrict hemp products. Idaho and Iowa have limits. USPS asks for documentation on hemp shipments.
Parameters to check before you pay
- Batch number on the bottle matches the certificate of analysis (COA).
- COA covers potency, pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, and microbials.
- Third-party lab name and test date. A report older than 12 months may not match the current batch.
- THC result. Broad spectrum should read 0.0% or below the lab limit of quantitation.
- Total cannabinoid count. Some broad spectrum products are 90% CBD and little else.
- Carrier oil and dose per serving. A 30 mL bottle with a 1 mL dropper holds 30 doses.
Pitfalls
- Prices below $0.02 per mg. Batch testing runs $300 to $1,000. A $9 bottle with 1,000 mg does not cover that cost.
- No COA, or a COA with no batch number.
- Health claims. The FDA has not approved CBD as a dietary supplement. Companies that claim CBD treats cancer, pain, or anxiety have received FTC warning letters.
- Drug interactions. CBD affects CYP450 enzymes. Talk to a pharmacist if you take warfarin, clopidogrel, or anti-seizure drugs.
- "Near me" listings that are lead forms, not stores. Call and ask for the street address and the license number.
- Dose claims. Clinical trials used 25 mg to 50 mg per day for some conditions. Epidiolex, the FDA-approved CBD drug, uses higher doses under a prescription.
Checklist
Ask four questions before purchase: What is the mg per bottle? What is the batch number? Can I see the COA? What is the return policy? If a seller cannot answer all four, buy elsewhere.
